Work-From-Home Mom Life: What It Really Looks Like

Business

Every now and then, I see a post in a mom group that hits so close to home I can’t help but jump in. Recently, a mama asked whether working from home was even realistic. Whether she could be present with her child and help support her family financially… or if starting a small business was just a lovely idea with no real path forward.

And ohhhh… I felt that one.

Because I’ve been there. The tug-of-war between wanting to be present with your babies and needing to contribute financially. The desire to build a life that feels free but also stable. The fear of messing it all up. The hope that there’s a version of motherhood where you get to do meaningful work without missing the good stuff at home.

So I shared my story.

And now I want to share it here, too — in case you need to hear it today.

What Work-From-Home Mom Life Actually Looks Like

I’ve owned my business for nearly 6 years at the time of writing this, and when my son was born, everything changed in the best, hardest, most stretching way possible.

I took three months of maternity leave. Zero laptop time. Zero pressure. Just healing, bonding, adjusting.

Then in October, I came back “full-time”… but full-time looks very different now. Some days I’m building websites with a baby snuggled into a wrap on my chest. Other days I’m answering emails while he nurses at the kitchen table and supper’s boiling over on the stove. Some afternoons he’s happily playing on the floor mat or in the pack-and-play while I work in short, focused bursts.

I mean this sincerely, working with him isn’t any harder than doing anything else with him. Everything in motherhood is an adjustment and this is just another one. You learn to adapt. You learn to pivot. You learn to stop chasing perfection and instead chase sustainability.

And you get really good at three things:

  • Automating anything you repeat more than twice
  • Delegating the tasks someone else can do
  • Eliminating all the “shoulds” that don’t actually matter

That’s the “secret” to working from home with a baby on your hip.

Why I’ll Never Go Back to Working for Someone Else

Being a work-from-home mom isn’t easy, but it’s one of the greatest gifts in my life.

I get to be present. I get to set my schedule. I get to hold my baby whenever he needs me. I get to build something I enjoy and be the mom I want to be.

There is no world where I’d trade that for a clock-in-clock-out job. And if you’re dreaming about that kind of freedom? It’s possible. For real.

If you want to see the kind of work I get to create during naptimes and independent play breaks, peek my portfolio here.

Should You Start Your Own Business? Here’s My Honest Take

If you have something you love — painting banners, designing, photography, tutoring, baking, organizing, whatever lights you up — starting your own business can be one of the most flexible, life-giving ways to earn income as a mom.

You get to:

  • Set your own hours
  • Stay home with your babies
  • Grow at your own pace
  • Build something that serves your family long-term
  • And create margin for the life you’re dreaming about

Will it be perfect? No. Will every week look the same? Absolutely not. Heck, not even every day looks the same over here.  But when there’s a will, there’s a way — and moms are some of the most resourceful humans on the planet.

If You’re On the Fence, Here’s Your Sign

If your heart is nudging you toward entrepreneurship… listen. Start slow. Start simple. Start imperfectly. But start. Your future self — and your babies — will thank you for building a life that gives you freedom, purpose, and presence.

And when you’re ready to give your business an online home that feels aligned, intentional, and bookable… I’d be honored to help bring it to life.
